CAKE THE VOTE! Have a slice of cake today and enjoy a bite of history. This week’s fresh baked good is Election Cake! Perhaps you heard the special feature about election cakes on NPR radio the other week. If you didn’t, here’s the low-down, the skinny, the scoop. You may be able to tell from this week’s box (bag) that we’re getting excited about the upcoming holiday season. We are starting to test out some recipes—and you’re the lucky recipients. For starters, there’s pumpkin pie. Yeah, we baked our ‘pie’ in mini tart pans because they were the perfect size for testing. Rest assured that our official pumpkin pie comes in a pie tin. Our organic emmer farro wheat is grown for us by Bluebird Grain Farms out of Winthrop, WA. I am quite a fan of Bluebird Grain Farms. I was fortunate to work with them for nearly a decade—helping them to sell their products to grocery stores and restaurants throughout western Washington and Oregon....

The keys to bring out the silky pudding-ness of it are to soak the bread for a bit beforehand and to cook it in a water bath. Modify this recipe as you wish. Add fruit. Change the spices. Splash brandy on it. ½-3/4 pound of bread, cubed in ½” chunks 2 eggs 2 cups milk 1/3 cup brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon vanilla ½ teaspoon cinnamon (or cardamom) Pinch of nutmeg Pinch of salt Beat eggs....
